Another wave of new items have been added to the website:

* Solid State Indicators: Three new vintage LEDs, including a very early green model.
* Microwave Oscillator Tubes: Raytheon QK291 Ka-band tunable klystron.
* Filament Displays:IEE 220H-6409-B-328 One-Plane Readout and the tiny Wamco KW-105 minitron.

2008-06-03 The Internet is a Series of Tubes!
Posted by AnubisTTP

We have added several new scientific apparatus to the Gas Discharge Tubes section: a Crookes cathode ray tube and two spectrum tubes that appear mundane in function, but are constructed with very unusual envelopes. Other new tubes to appear on the site are the General Electric GL-6452 x-band reference cavity and the uranium-doped Eimac CIM-481274 vacuum capacitor.

Not every new item to appear in this update is a tube however. We have added a vintage and strange Motorola LED, which is packaged in a red epoxy TO-92 case, to the Solid State Indicators section.

We have added several new LEDs to the Solid State Indicators section, all of which feature metal can style packages. The TLMP 9210, TLMP 9310, and TLMP 9710 are a series of nearly modern, hermetically sealed LEDs which use a metal TO-46 package. The Soviet-made 3L341V is a green metal and epoxy packaged LED that was manufactured shortly before the fall of the Soviet Union.

We have also added a very rare Monsanto MDA-111 display module, an integrated character generator and driver for the Monsanto MAN-2 bitmapped LED display.

2008-03-19 New Items

We have added several unusual new items to the site over the past few weeks. The Burroughs SD-11 is a sphericular optical display, a niche numeric display device that may look like a projection display, but does not function even remotely like one. ETL's GS12C is one of the most unusual dekatrons that the company ever made, a base 12 selector with a rare 'maintenance' style base, which has lugs instead of pins for easy direct connection of wire leads. We have also added a number of Western Electric integrated circuits to the Solid State Logic section.

We have added three more dekatrons to the Glow Transfer Counting Tubes section: the GC12/4B, GC10D and GC10/4C. The GC12/4B may look like a normal Ericsson dekatron, but it has unusual internal function. Unlike most dekatrons, the GC12D has the ability to perform base-12 counting instead of base-10. The GC10D is one of the few British argon-filled dekatrons, and is even more noteworthy because it still contains its original gas. The GC10/4C is a standard neon bidirectional counter, but has a unique compact envelope and base that separates it from its more common 'B' suffixed brothers.

2007-12-18 Journey to the Center of the Diode
Posted by AnubisTTP

Four new vintage light emitting diodes have been added to the Solid State Displays section: the Monsanto MV2, HP 1842-7329, Fairchild FLV-100/FPT-100 pair, and the Fairchild FLV-102. The Monsanto MV2 is considered by many collectors to be the first production visible light LED, and the other new additions are of similar distinguished lineage. Be sure to check out the die photos, which show the internal structures of these early diodes from a perspective rarely viewed.

2007-11-17 Counting Tube Countdown
Posted by AnubisTTP

Two new counter tubes have been added to the Glow Transfer Counting Tubes section; the 8035 and 8353 bidirectional selectors. These Sylvania-manufactured dekatrons are both small and fast, the 8035 can count up to 100kHz and is half the size of a standard octal counting tube.

We have also added a MAN-2 bitmapped display, the birth of the 5x7 LED matrix, and an HP manufactured 2416 to the Solid State Displays section.

2007-10-18 Liquid Crystals
Posted by AnubisTTP

Every time we post a device that is supposed to be the 'first' of something ever made, we always have to include the boilerplate caveat: it is the first production unit. Lab samples of course were made, but the public never gets a chance to document them since they never leave the lab. With this in mind, it is nice to occasionally be able to show an actual laboratory sample of a new technology, a RCA TA-8032 liquid crystal display sample. Arguably the world's first seven segment LCD, the TA-8032 is an example of both an interesting display and a significant technological discovery.

We have also added several other displays, a Signaltron ST-15 split flap display and an IEE in-line projection display to the Filament Displays section, and a MAN-3A LED display to the Solid State Displays section.

2007-10-06 Tube Update Triggered
Posted by AnubisTTP

Another batch of new parts have been added to the Component Devices section:

* Tuning Indicators: 6977 logic indicator.
* Solid State Displays: DL1414T alphanumeric smart display, a variation of the 2416.
* Gas Discharge Tubes: New lit photo added for the SS-501 control/flash tube.
* Spark Gap and Triggered Gap Tubes: Sylvania 0A5 trigger tube.
* Display and Counting Assemblies: A new lit photo for the NCM/Busicom display module with MG-17F nixies.

2007-09-05 Even More Tubes
Posted by AnubisTTP

Several new electron tubes have been added to the Component Devices section.

*Gas Discharge Displays: Burroughs HB-106 nixie indicator.
*Detection and Imaging Tubes: Valvo 90AG phototube.
*Spark Gap and Triggered Gap Tubes: Sylvania 5823 trigger tube.
*Tuning Indicators: RCA 6HU6 / EM87 magic eye indicator.

2007-08-12 Glow Transfer
Posted by AnubisTTP

We have added three new counting tubes to the Glow Transfer Counting Tubes section, including an unusual deviation from standard counting tube construction, a British made G10/241E nomotron. We have also added a strange and bizarre Western Electric 6167 unidirectional counter, and a comparatively bland GS10C neon filled selector.

2007-07-22 In The Beginning...
Posted by AnubisTTP

We have added several vintage LED displays to the Component Devices section, most notably three variants of the Monsanto MAN-1, generally considered to be the first seven segment LED display ever made. We have also added a couple more advanced displays: the seven-digit National Semiconductor NSA578 LED display, and a HP DL2416T with built-in character generator and ASCII decoder.

2007-06-18 Glowing Glassware
Posted by AnubisTTP

More vacuum electronics have been added to the Component Devices section, including two new Emission Sources: a functionally useless but physically attractive Geissler tube and a blatantly functional Varian thoria iridium ion source. Other new items include a large General Electric KR-9 rectifier tube in the Diodes, Triodes... section, and a GM Labs #2 Visitron in the Detection & Imaging Tubes section.

2007-05-28 The First Ones
Posted by AnubisTTP

Two new neon indicator tubes have been added to the Gas Discharge Displays section: a Burroughs B-5092 nixie tube and the extremely rare National Union GI-10 'Inditron', a 'nixie' tube that predates the Haydu/Burroughs trademark by as much as a year. We have also added a DC106A magnetic beam switching decade counter module to the Display & Counting Circuits section and a Tungar bulb to the Diodes, Triodes... section.

2007-05-14 More Numeric Devices
Posted by AnubisTTP

We have added a Star adding machine, an early model of mechanical calculator, to the Instrumentation Museum. This device, manufactured by the Todd Protectograph Co. in the early 1920's, is somewhat different than the comptometers that were popular at the time.

We have also added two new items to the Vacuum Fluorescent Displays section: a multi-digit IV-18 tube, and a side view DG19E manufactured by Iseden.
