Philco produced a number of transistors in its signature pill-shaped TO-24 package. The 2N346 is one such device, which was released in 1959 as part of a family of germanium surface barrier transistors which also included the 2N344 and 2N345. The 2N346 was marketed as a general purpose device, with a higher maximum frequency and lower gain than other devices in the family. Although most 2N346's were manufactured in aluminum packages like the one shown in the photo, some examples were produced with gold plated shells. The 2N346 was also produced in an internal part number variant, the SB103, which appears to have been produced in much smaller quantities.
