Description

MSC produced a number of different incandescent displays, this example allows for the display of full alphanumeric output. The display contains 14 lamps, one for each segment. Two pairs of segments are joined together to allow a full 16 segment alphanumeric character to be displayed with only 14 lamps. An edge connector on the back of the device plugs into a matching socket for easy replacement. The display uses 5 volt 'grain of wheat' bulbs, which are soldered to a printed circuit board. Replacement of burned out bulbs is tedious, since each bulb must be desoldered before it can be removed. Fortunately the display is held together with screws, and can be disassembled for bulb replacement. The modern builder might elect to replace the incandescent lamps with LEDs, but the small size of the display makes this a challenging prospect. Only 3mm LEDs would be small enough to fit in the voids left by the removed lamps, and a custom PCB would likely be required to mate the LEDs to the edge connector on the back of the display.
